The percentile rule in the MHT-CET exam is used to determine a candidate's relative performance compared to other candidates who appeared for the exam. It is essential to understand the concept of percentile before diving into the percentile rule in MHT-CET.
Percentile is a statistical measure that indicates the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below a particular score. For instance, if a candidate has a percentile of 85, it means they have performed better than 85% of the total candidates who appeared for the exam.
Arrange the scores in ascending order: Scores: 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, ... (and so on, up to 100 students)
Calculate the percentile for a particular student:
To calculate the percentile:
  1. Find the number of students who scored less than or equal to 80. In this case, there are 5 students who scored less than or equal to 80 (60, 65, 70, 75, 80).
  2. Find the total number of students who appeared for the exam (which is 100 in our example).
  3. Use the formula: Percentile = (Number of students scored less than or equal to X / Total number of students) × 10

In this case: Percentile = (5 / 100) × 100 = 5%

So, the student who scored 80 marks has a percentile of 5%. It means they performed better than only 5% of the total students who appeared for the exam.

In a similar manner, you can calculate the percentile for any other student based on their score. The higher the percentile, the better the student's performance compared to others. For example, if a student has a percentile of 90%, it means they performed better than 90% of the total students who took the exam.
